An unidentified woman of Guadeloupe has the rare blood type on Earth, to the point that she is only compatible with herself.
The 68 -year -old is so far the only known member of the “negative Gwada” blood group, according to the news.
The moniker comes from the colloquial name of the French Caribbean Island that the woman calls at home.
Scientists of the French Blood establishment, who discovered Gwada Negative, announced their findings this month in a presentation to the International Blood Transfusion Society in Milan.
The research team was introduced to women in 2001 when he lived in Paris and underwent routine blood testing for surgery. Doctors could not identify their blood type or any coincidence.
DNA analysis was not advanced enough at the time to explore the case, but in 2019, researchers used new generation technology to sequence the whole patient’s genome.
The investigation revealed a mutation in the PIGz gene, which affects how proteins anchor on the surface of blood cells. The team determined that the woman inherited her unique blood profile from her parents, as they both carried the mutated gene.
“This woman is undoubtedly the only known case in the world,” Thierry peyrardHe told AFP a biologist in EFS. “She is the only person in the world who is compatible with herself.”
Human blood groups classifications are based on antigens, proteins and sugars on the surface of red blood cells.
